The number eight was probably a number he defaulted to in his gambling days and is known to be lucky in Asian culture. Also he is known to have been a quite unsuccessful gambler so you have to add a bit of poor judgement into the mix.

How could someone have picked $1 when he went last and that value was still on the board??
