![]() Disney has confirmed that one of the Star Wars spinoffs will be titled Rogue One, while also confirming that Star Wars Episode VIII will be released on May 26, 2017. The company's CEO Bob Iger revealed in an investor call today (March 12) that director Gareth Edwards's Rogue One will star Oscar nominee Felicity Jones and will begin production this summer in London. ogue One - which opens on December 16, 2016 - is a story that screenwriter Chris Weitz will set outside of the core Star Wars saga, while still maintaining connections to its universe. Iger also confirmed during the investor call that Looper's Rian Johnson will both write and direct Star Wars Episode VIII. Its release on May 26, 2017 is being timed to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The first film for the revived franchise will be director JJ Abrams's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, opening on December 18. Original franchise stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill are all back for the film, along with new cast members John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver and Andy Serkis.
