Parents of Madeleine McCann WIN libel trial against Portuguese detective who is ordered to pay the couple £75,000


  1. Goncalo Amaral wrote book claiming missing toddler had died in accident
  2. McCanns told court they were left 'devastated and crushed' by the book
  3. The couple also accuse Amaral of hampering the search for their daughter


A former Portuguese detective has been ordered to pay £75,000 to Kate and Gerry McCann after a long-running libel trial, it was reported today.
Police chief Goncalo Amaral ran the initial investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Portugal in 2007.
He then went on to write a book in which he claimed the toddler had died in an accident in Praia da Luz and had not been abducted.
