Mum who put son with Down’s syndrome in washing machine says she had to flee her home
Quote:
Courtney Stewart hit the headlines when she posted an image of her son in a washing machine on Facebook.
The 21-year-old mum explained she took the photo after her inquisitive 2-year-old, Caleb, climbed into the unplugged kitchen appliance while they were playing peek-a-boo.
The image was reported to the police, she received a visit from social services and while neither authority pressed the issue, Ms Stewart was the subject of a backlash of abuse after the snap went viral.
She revealed: ‘A cruel Facebook page demonising me because I have a disabled child was set up in my name and the photo went viral, making me the world’s most hated mum.
Some critics even went as far to say if Caleb wasn’t removed by social services, they’d take him themselves.
The young mum was so frightened she even requested police watch her home in Erskine, Renfreshire.
When the threats didn’t stop, she packed up and left the property, only returning last week.
Ms Stewart admits she regrets taking the photo, in a chat with Mail Online, she blasts it as a silly mistake.
But she doesn’t feel she’s been treated fairly, adding: ‘What people couldn’t hear because the sound was removed was Caleb laughing during our rough and tumble game.
‘I didn’t deserve to be judged as a monster. Most upsetting is the thought that people pity Caleb having me as a mum – he is such a happy little boy and he couldn’t have a more loving family.’
