A man has taken the wife and son of a policeman hostage in Paris after stabbing the officer to death.
The man is holding the hostages in the policeman's home in Magnanville, northwest of the French capital. Two large explosions have been heard as the RAID unit storm the building were the assailant is holed up. There are as yet unconfirmed reports the man has been shot in the raid. The attacker stabbed the officer repeatedly outside the property as he returned home around 9pm local time – 7pm GMT – sources said. There are as yet unconfirmed reports the man was shouting "Islamic slogans". The attacker was described as a teenager or in his early 20s. Interior ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said: “Negotiations have been opened with the killer and the neighbourhood has been sealed off.” The alarm was raised by neighbours of the victim. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the assailant shouted he was holding hostages. Neighbours report hearing the man shouting "Islamic slogans". The police officer who was killed has been identified by local media as Commander Jean-Baptiste Salvaing.
