I struggle to understand the Scots. Can someone help me out?

I am not from the UK and I struggle to understand the Scots.

Broadly speaking, what is their mentality? They seem to want to hang onto England only on the condition that England hangs onto Brussels.

I thought this was the land of Braveheart?
