Anyway the dog ran in to grab the baby so I dont think it is just self-concern. Pack mentality is strong and they will do things to assist the other if they think the pack is in trouble. On the other hand, an animal with aggression can be dangerously defensive of their pack... pit bulls are known for being very loyal to the family, though some dogs might not be happy to a young new addition to the pack if not introduced properly... in this case, obviously the child is considered to be a pack-member.... was my first thought.
