I used to handle Alberta death certificates on a daily basis. “Unknown” and “undetermined” are just placeholders because it takes the Medical Examiner’s office months to get answers back on lab work and other forensic tests since there’s always been a massive backlog. I’m sure that’s only gotten worse in the past couple years. The cause of death is updated when the result comes back.
