the whole design is done on the cheap. They designed it that way due to the enormous pressure at the depth of the titanic, so the sub would require more expensive parts if it had a hatch. Also, it may not actually be possible to open a hatch at that level, so they would need something more like a tube that the could open/close from side to side rather than opening outward

It doesn't look very safe to me. Did they not think they would get trapped in there if something was to go wrong?
I do hope they find them but they need to be fast. Their oxygen is limited.
