If we were to all vote by how critically acclaimed the artists are, rather than who we actually prefer, it would surely defeat the purpose.

I'm saying that, whilst there is no "critic" that everyone will universally agree with, critical opinion and personal opinion shouldn't be mutually exclusive. Otherwise people are ultimately going "right well this band won the Mercury Prize, have 3 albums on Q's top 100 of the decade and won 5 Brit Awards, but I don't really care because Tik Tok has a killer a chorus!!"

I didn't ignore Ke$ha complete lack of talent because I don't believe she is completely talentless, she writes a mean chorus and can play numerous instruments.

And where is this rule about only released material allowed to be taken into consideration stated?

When I was writing the shortlist of artists to be included, I said [probably OP] that to qualify the artists had to have their first
release after 31 December 1999 (and before 31 December 2009). Therefore, god knows why I included her with only one song. Had I known TiBB's pop messes would crawl out and vote in their droves for her to win, I know sure as Hell I wouldn't have.
