My elderly uncle commented over xmas that todays actors don't have the acting ability or the charisma of yesteryears actors (eg James Stewart, Clark Gable etc)

I had to disagree... I can think of a few modern day thespians who are not only the best of our generation,but possibly the best ever!

Here is my first example.. Two of the best actors of today together..
Daniel Day Lewis, in my opinion,is one of, if not THE best actor of all time!

I also think Leonardo De Caprio is pretty good

Leonardo DiCaprio is also one of my all time favourites.. I've seriously loved him since What's Eating Gilbert Grape..

I reckon Johnny Depp is one of the most underrated actors of today.. He's fantastic in everything he does (even if his Tim Burton appearances don't appeal to me)

I have to say he was absolutely fantastic as Jack Sparrow and in From Hell.

Nor me but he does the characters well. Even as Willy Wonka (as much as I disliked the new one) I thought the character he created was interesting atleast.

Yip.. just watched it the other day and thought is was fairly ****e but there's no taking it away from him.. that man can act! And I reckon he has discovered some anti ageing secret that he isn't letting on about!

Christian Bale + Leonardo DiCaprio are the best of the younger actors. Mark Wahlberg aswell actually.

Yeah.. and I know it'snot everybody's cup of tea, but to me his performance in "Brokeback Mountain" was utterly utterly fab! I cried for a whole day.. A straight man playing a gay man like that was admirable and he did it with lot of emotion I thought

Leonardo DiCaprio sucks. He really can't act. The Aviator was the final proof of that.
New actors? Dunno if there really is any one good, really. Ewan McGregor seems to great, at least The Ghost Writer proofed that.

Eh? See, I thought he was brilliant as Howard Hughes. I think he chooses his roles carefully and then really gets into them!

Ewan Mcgregor is a bit meh for me..

The Departed, Inception, Shutter Island (which isn't a great film), Blood Diamond, Catch Me If You Can, Gangs of New York... all proof DiCaprio is a good actor.

He is good in This Boy's Life aswell, but overshadowed by DeNiro (he is only about 16 in it though).

Robert Carlyle. Loved him in Angela's Ashes and basically anything he's done. He's great with accents too
