But she seems to think it's already been decided that the deal won't go ahead.. it seems odd that people are happy to criticise her but not to consider the possibility that what she says might be true

She didn't say that, the article said that; that was technically his official winnings so they're not wrong in stating that. The article is ambiguous as to whether he has stuck to his deal or not, but Jay's Mum explicitly states that Aaron has gone back on the agreement
