I think it's a combination of her being the first international sex symbol of the media age - yes you had beautiful and more talented actresses before her, but she was packaged as this bottle blonde sexy woman who socialised with the most powerful men in America; and the fact she died relatively young and seemed quite wise for someone who was pigeon holed into this sex symbol status.
