Avenged sevenfold-over the years I'd heard about them before, browsed by their names many times but I never bothered to listen because I just assumed they would be too hardcore for me. So a few weeks ago now here on this board don't remember which thread it was in chat games (constantly thinking about it trying to remember), I was going to reply something smart to someone like "relax it's not like they're blasting Avenged sevenfold" (the name came out of the blue). Before posting though I went to youtube to check out to see if they were as hardcore as I thought to see if my post would make sense. I youtuve avenged sevenfold, so far away was the first song I clicked on and boom now I can't get over them.

Backstreet boys- was wee, saw the "get down" video on mtv thought what the **** is this crap, but still watched it all. Then came their next single "I'll go anywhere for you" and I was like what, you know what these boys can sang! And boom!

Can't remember the others how I discovered them...

Trying to impress a girl in high school by listening to the same music as her and then ending up liking it anyway, that's how I got into rock/metal/hardcore/punk

R. Kelly - I watched Space Jam when it came out and loved I Believe I Can Fly, got his album for christmas which was the first CD I ever got.
The Streets & James Blunt - Music channels.
Stereophonics - Can't really remember, just that I had the live CD of Have a Nice Day and preferred it to the studio CD.
Mark Owen - CUK

..I think that most of the older stuff I like from when I was younger, I got from one of my brothers who was kind of a guru for me, he had such a varied music collection and stuff I would probably not usually have listened to...

..although I've always loved David Bowie's music, I think that I truly fell in love with him when I once met him, which was through a friend of a friend type thing/someone who worked in the music industry...

..all of the current stuff I like is either because of my son's and what they listen to or people who recommend artists/bands etc on here..or just generally 'stumbling' across stuff....

by growing up in the 90's.

I know it sounds stereotypical, but... kids these days don't know good music! lol

I do honestly believe i grew up in the the best musical age. Madonna, Michael jackson on the pop side, and smashing pumpkins, stone temple pilots, nirvana, on the rock side.

The 90's really was the best decade for music.

I was born in 1982, so i was at the perfect age to get the best of the 90's.

Same here (I'm 4 years older than you though)

Was mostly into rock/grunge. Me and my brother used to watch alot of MTV back then and we liked similar bands, that's probably where I started liking most of the bands i do (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green day, Alanis)

I also liked the Doors alot, i can't remember why I started listening to them though

I was a rebel in the 80s, so I didn't listen to 'mainstream' music. That's when I got into metal (black sabbath, iron maiden, metallica, deep purple, jimi hendrix).

Then I found my own taste, which was mostly hair metal (guns n roses, poison, bon jovi, whitesnake, kiss, l.a. guns, faster pussycat, vain, motley crue, skid row).

There was a brief goth phase [sisters of mercy, the cure, the cult, the damned), followed by a slightly longer punk phase (the clash, the sex pistols, dead kennedys, the stranglers, stiff little fingers, angelic upstarts, sham 69).

In the 90s I went through the inevitable rave phase. It's a bit of a haze, for obvious reasons.

Then I left the rave scene and had an indie phase (blur, stone roses, pulp, happy mondays, the lightning seeds).

I missed the first coming of Nirvana. I didn't really catch on to them until a few years later. But I didn't miss the punk revival of 94. That's when I discovered Green Day <3 (who are still my favourite band 20 years later).

From then, I kinda went full circle, and tend to favour Rock/Metal over other stuff. I have a weird selection of stuff on my itunes, but it's probably 75% punk/rock/metal. Some of it is older (linkin park, metallica, guns n roses etc) and some of it is more up to date (A7X, Bullet, Escape the Fate, Patent Pending, ). It doesn't mean I don't listen to Britney Spears, but you know...

I found metal in the first place because of my older brother and cousin. After that, I just found stuff I liked. In the 80s there was no internet, not much in the way of music on TV or in magazines, but we did have record shops. And the guy who owned the record shop would tell you about new bands, and let you hear singles/albums in the shop to see if you liked it before you bought it. We went to town every Saturday and went to the same record shop, and that's how we found music. Everyone knew the guy who ran the shop. He was the guy who got access to new bands, and he was the one who told people about them. I don't know how it worked in other places, but that's how it worked here.

So that was probably a longer reply than necessary.. lol

Just a combination of radio, TV, music blogs, magazines, recommendations from friends... I'd actually say TiBB has been one major source of discovering music, loads of people are really knowledgable about music and share some interesting stuff here

..wow, don't you miss those record shops..?...we would spend hours in there just chatting about different music and the guys would recommend stuff to listen to...and they had headphones in the shop for you to listen to tracks....

Yup, I miss them a LOT!

It was the social convening place as well... we'd come into town in a group, and other people from other towns would come in their small groups, and that's how we made friends from other places who liked the same music lol

Aww... that sounds really cool, I wish we still had that today... there was an independent record shop open in Aberdeen until the mid 2000s but the staff weren't knowledgable about music, they just stacked shelves and maybe knew about gigs in the area but there wasn't any offering to introduce you to new music or anything like that... that sounds really cool!

..yeah, and the fact that you could listen to the whole album before you bought it because there might have only been a few tracks that you liked...I'm not sure we were meant to do that though but the guys there were so laid back and they really knew their music/the obscure but good stuff...
