They open the tooth up and then put long files down the tooth into the root to remove the nerve/pulp which has gotten infected and caused an abscess, the removal of the nerve ensures there should be no more abscess/pain, it's a lengthy process and very costly but it is aesthetically better to keep all your teeth than to start having them removed, as removal of teeth causes food traps and then decay and then the other teeth end up needing treatment......i used to be a dental nurse.......boring job
