i can see it from both sides. not about this case specifically...
but in general food is often used to demean other people or make them feel different in a demeaning way... like saying to a korean or chinese that they eat dogs, or japanese eating raw fish, or the british eating horse...it can be said in a derogatory way even though it's part of their culture. people in australia eat kangaroo, people in florida eat alligator, people in canada bash baby seals over the head, people in africa kill albino humans to use heir body parts in voodoo rituals... its just different cultures.
