I'm sure you've seen the William Shakespeare google homepage today, if anyone didn't know it's because it's 400 years today that he died.


My question's are

Are there any Shakespeare fans?
Have you read any Shakespeare, and which?


I've never read any, but I think it's something I should do. Can anyone recommend any of his? I like comedy.

I remember reading Twelfth Night in school and enjoying it. We also watched the film of it (with Helena Bonham Carter) which I'd recommend too.

We studied Shakespeare at college, Othello and A Midsummer Night's Dream specifically (so one tragedy and one comedy). I loved them both. I'm a fan of darker, tragic stories anyway so Othello was great but I also loved the fantasy aspects with AMND.

I studied Romeo and Juliet for my English Literature GCSE, although I don't remember much of it and I don't really remember enjoying it either.

Some of his works I like probably my favourite is the scenario of 'all the World's a stage and we are all players on it'
'As You Like It' is probably my favourite of his works.

'The Tempest'
'The Merchants of Venice'
'A Midsummer nights dream' but Shakespearean comedy is nothing like modern day comedy; its more about a play on words with a good sprinkling of insults and plenty of metaphors.

Personally I'd go for bloody...'Macbeth' is my favourite

Isn't it bad look to mention the name of the Scottish play? or does that only apply to actors?

But that is the one I might have a go at.

I did go through a phase of buying his plays after I left college... most are a challenge rather than a pleasure to read IMO.

Favourites are As You Like It, The Merchant of Venice & A Midsummer Night's Dream though. Generally prefer the comedies. Have also read Much Ado About Nothing, Antony & Cleopatra, Romeo & Juliet and King Lear.

In school/college we covered Henry V, Macbeth and The Tempest. The Tempest was a total chore.
