This hypersensitivity to anything that isn't politically correct has been killing the show for a decade now. If you put 14 people in a house and film then some prejudices will be revealed, this is supposed to be a social experiment and society has prejudices. I wish the producers would keep their morally superior attitudes out of it. Unless someone is being singled out and bullied then there should be no interference.

I do wonder if this hysteria is caused mainly on forums like this (I mean in general like you say not just this incident)

I dont have any opinion on this specific issue as im not part of the group affected. A lot of time people speculate what other people are going to find offensive (in general) and sometimes make things seem more serious than they are.
