Angry former Labour ministers have poured ridicule on Jeremy Corbyn’s new year message, after the defeated leader claimed to be “the resistance to Boris Johnson”.

The bizarre address – in which Mr Corbyn also vowed to “be on the frontline, both in parliament and on the streets” – appears to have backfired spectacularly following his general election wipeout.

One former party adviser said of the observation that it had been “quite the year” for Labour: “White Star Line: 1912 was ‘quite a year’ for Titanic.”


That was the only oblique reference Mr Corbyn made to the election disaster, failing to mention it directly even as he told the nation: “We’re up for the fight.”

Instead, he said: “We have built a movement. We are the resistance to Boris Johnson. We will be campaigning every day. We will be on the frontline, both in parliament and on the streets.


“And, make no mistake, our movement is very strong. We are half a million people and growing. We are in every region and nation of our country.”

delayed quitting or the antisemitism that has poisoned the party on his watch.

The outgoing leader, who led Labour to its worst performance at the polls since 1934,
took a defiant stance as he insisted the party was “the resistance” against Boris Johnson
and would be “on the front line” and “on the streets” opposing the Government. His
extraordinary message also failed to mention the dozens of loyal Labour MPs who lost
their seats in the party’s Midlands and northern strongholds where voters felt
alienated by Mr Corbyn’s dithering on Brexit and roundly rejected the long list
of promises in his left-wing manifesto.

One former Labour MP branded Mr Corbyn “deluded” and accused him of failing
to understand the damage caused under his “dreadful” leadership.


Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas tweeted: “After a dismal decade for Labour - four
election defeats ending with our lowest number of MPs since 1935, here’s hoping the
next decade sees no more wild, multi-billion pound ‘fully costed’ manifestos, an end to
antisemitism and a Leader who thinks winning is better than opposition.”


And Caroline Flint, who also lost her seat at the election, said: “But why no mention of
the General Election Jeremy?JC: ‘What General Election?’ That’s one way to do a review!”


Former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith said: “Labour have withdrawn into a virtual
chatroom. This leadership election now is in danger of becoming an exercise in virtue
signalling to the hard-left.”

How she has the cheek to call herself a Labour MP I don't know... To me she's in the same school as Leeds West MP Rachel Reeves (my MP) for me the most central of centrists, a slight breeze and they would be across the floor.
