I suspect yes. He is hoping the Ukrainians will mass many thousands of troops into Russia and Putin will ambush them, killing them all in mass bombing like you say - even using some tactical nuclear weapons.

It's been a brilliant surprise move by Ukraine. What it's also revealed though is that they're now talking very openly about wanting to force Russia to the negotiating table rather than a full scale removal of Russian forces from their country like has been the stance so far

A sort of get-out clause. Not using them on another country but killing the 'enemy' within his own country.
