Yeah, DC is right on this one. Most stars that make up the galaxies in that picture have a lifespan shorter than the time it is has taken for the light to reach us.

The star Betelgeuse in the initial animation is said to be near the end of its life and has been observed to be shrinking recently. It could go supernova and explode soon, might have already happened.

They are certainly very galaxy shaped lights. And we do know that an unknown, huge number of galaxies exist out there. So I really don't know where ILoveDC is coming from.

I hope he thinks it's some sort of conspiracy that the world powers decided to come up with in order to give us some hope. That would be cool. There are roughly 1.7 × 10 - to the power of eleven - galaxies in the universe. 170 billion.

Not necassarily. Plenty of them have expired and we are seeing them through time, yeah, but plenty still exist. I don't know anybody could look at a half dozen and blankly declare they no longer exist. That's a completely naive and baseless comment.

It's a weird concept alright though. Somewhere in the universe another race could be looking at the Earth from a different point in history!
