I rang the Techguys at PC World as I have a service contract with them expecting to arrange for an engineer to come out.

He said I need to buy a Terra byte external hard drive and back al my data up and then get back to them about reinstalling the operating system, i.e the nuke option to see if it is a software issue, before exploring whether I have a hardware fault.

My sister does not believe I need one because although my system says I have a lot of data, a lot of it will just be programmes which can be reinstalled and he was only saying that as he wants the commission.

Anyway, the Techguy then walked me through uninstalling the graphics driver and rebooting so it re-installs the driver from a copy somewhere on the hard drive

I have not yet tried firefox since then as I am nervous. A friend has told me to uninstall Firefox and then reinstall it. I seem to be using my laptop more.

As a side issue I was supposed to be changing printers this weekend. When a church minister left in may, he passed me on his up to date printer he bought at the same PC World store when I was getting my desktop. I print the church newsletter so they pay for my ink. At the time when he gave it to me, I had just installed a fresh cartridge on my old printer and had one in reserve. The old cartridges are finally depleting and so I was about to change to this new printer before this BSOD started. That would mean uninstalling the driver and software for the old printer and installing the new one. With the problems I am getting I am figuring this is a bad idea. Is that right?

Are you saying the hardware was at fault?

Sticks go with what your sister says, MS only put the warning about losing data there to cover their butts, generally speaking when you reinstall an operating system it writes itself in exactly the same places as opposed to when you save some data, which will be wrote in available blocks.

Its only when you have removed some of windows features, like the uninstall information from every update etc, then started saving data there is that possibility.

You will have to reinstall all your programs, shouldnt be a problem though.

As for your printer, there is no need to uninstall your old printer when installing the new one, windows can hold lots of peripheries details available for use. Simply set the new printer as 'default' when installing.
