Taylor Lautner, who plays Jacob Black in the highly successful film franchise The Twilight Saga, has fallen victim to an internet hoax which said he was announcing to the world that he was gay. The 19-year old had been pictured above a headline that reads 'Out and Proud' on a front cover of US magazine People, which had been widely circulated online, but both the magazine cover and Lautner's supposed admission have both been revealed to be fake.

The magazine cover had been so widely circulated that some high profile celebrities had even taken the time to praise Lautner for his bravery.

Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons tweeted his congratulations to the actor, writing: ''Proud of Taylor Lautner for his bravery and his courage". However, after he realised his mistake, Simmons added: "Disappointed that people would joke about someone coming out about their sexuality. Let Taylor Lautner be whoever he wants to be."

Lautner had previously denied he was gay in an interview in the November issue of GQ Australia, after he was asked by a reporter whether acclaimed director Gus Van Sant and Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, both of whom happen to be gay, had propositioned him during a dinner in June.

Asked about the evening and whether either one of the men had come on to him, Lautner replied: "'No, definitely not. I think they know I'm straight. But they're great guys. They're a lot of fun."

GQ Australia later apologised for the line of questioning after Black complained that it implied "gay men are by nature sexual predators".
