When I started smoking I didnt even get them from shops, neither did most people I knew at the time. Nor did I find the boxes 'colourful and eye catching'

I noticed this new display thing in morrisons on tuesday. I only noticed because the sliding door was jammed for the poor woman behind the counter who was waiting for her supervisor to come to sort it out while the queue got longer and people tutted at her like it was her fault. Felt really bad for her actually :S

..yeah I bet it's gone down really well with the staff..and imo..there's nothing quite like a bit of 'taboo-ness' to encourage you to try it more..it actually draws attention to it

Arista its really not. If it was I would fully support this as (although I smoke) it would be fantastic to see a decrease in the number of young smokers

But teens will be teens, and the more taboo something is, the more they want to do it.

Think about it...take drinking. In greece (I can only use this as an example because I lived there and noticed this) the legal drinking limit is 14. Yet in the 6 months I was there...working in a bar...I never once saw a 14 year old drunk. They came in occasionally for a half or two but thats it. Compare this to our limit of 18 which sees kids as young as 11/12 downing litres of cider on street corners because they arent 'allowed' to...

Well, not being on display doesn't seem to have decreased the uptake of other drugs. I've never see cocaine or heroin on display, or a prettily packaged bag of weed... and yet people still get into it.

Alcohol will need hiding too at this rate, although that will not stop the determined alcoholics because they will just go round to the pub or get booze off someone they know...

Great point, this.

The more I think about it, the more stupid it becomes.

Riding a motorbike on pavements is illegal.

Smoking outside is not.

I'd have thought that was more than obvious......

Absolutely. And part of the attraction is that little edge in knowing your doing something you really shouldn't be doing when rolling a spliff....... it add to the allure, to the fun of it all.

It's a fabulous move on the government's part - it's going to make it seem all so surrepticious, something bad to be doing - so bad that it's cool ..... and all the while, they rake in the tax and revenue. Not so daft our politicians....not so daft at all.

arista, you know by and large I agree with you on most things, this is one I don't.
If any Govt had the courage to dare to make selling cigarettes illegal then their hypocrisy as to this would then be gone for the most part.

However, smoking, drinking etc are legal acts in the UK and the Govt should excuse the pun butt out and let people smoke if they want to and not to if they don't,
A legal product on sale in the UK should not be hidden from those who wish to purchase it, that is interference in private business on a scale even the last nanny Govt ,Labour, didn't reach.

Indeed the covering up of the displays, with the panelling most have put up now in fact only draws your attention more to what it is covering up.

This is in my view a stupid ruling by this Govt, one of a good few rulings already done and still growing.

If our goverment played fair ball: they'd actually gain MORE tobacco sales in the long run.

Amber Leaf baccy - was being sold on a promo - 1kg with free 1/2 bottle of vodka ! Superb!

Oh. I dont know if shes aware, might give her a ring later. I didnt know there was no limit now, and neither does she...she thinks its still like 5k a person or whatever it was (has told my brothers friend to bring a massive suitcase even if he doesnt need it, and told my dad and brother they need one each instead of sharing )

Edit oh, 3.2k it looks like it was. LOL at them trying to stop people bringing more than 800

Of course it's stupid. The wee buggar that's in all of us at times; when someone tells you NOT to do something or that you can't have something: that's when it makes you all the more curious. The one guaranteed way for me to try something out when I was younger was to tell me 'No...'.

Friends of mine brought in a load of rolling tobacco and were asked if it was soley for them - which it was - and were actually asked if they could demonstrate by making a rollie..... True.

But the crucial wording is the bit I bolded.... - it's jus that they 'may' make it 'more likely' for you to be questioned - it's a frightener - nothing more.

Well if they do that to mum, dad can make rollies so thats fine

She would also probably say something about only being able to afford to go away once every 3 years or something (lies but they dont know that) to justify her huge haul. She doesnt get nervous around authority, like me

When me gav and his dad went to turkey, his dad brought back a lot more than we were meant to (you are only allowed 200 per person OR tobacco I think it is, he had about 4000 + loads of baccy) and he proper choked at the airport. They didnt search us but they asked how many ciggies he had. He went bright red and started stuttering so I said we had 200 each. They then asked about baccy to which I replied that the baccy out there was crap and snide, why would we want to smoke any of that crap...and I actually want a cig now after the 3+ hour journey so can they please leave me alone. It worked and they let us through

Hello! ... As an ex smoker I am for the ban, it was harder trying to quit when they seemed to be everywhere! haha. In the queue at the lottery terminal they mock you ...hide them I say.

They've had this in place at my local Co-Op for a few weeks now, it's absolutely ridiculous. Big black doors infront of the cigarettes with 'Can't see what you're looking for? Ask a member of staff if you want tobacco.'

I can't imagine anyone being deterred by that.
