Not for any particular reason but I was more upset at the news of the lion being killed. Possibly because I found it more shocking that a man would pay a lot of money to kill a creature, or because it was a purposeful death whereas the migrant dying was an accident (I think anyway)

I guess those are good points really, at least Robert the Migrant (I have named him. His name was Robert Paulson.) wasn't hunted so there is a difference fundamentally there.

And the fact that this guy paid a five figure sum to kill a lion is completely obscene. An amount that an entire family could live on comfortably for a year in the UK and for a hell of a lot longer in Africa. That's a whole different thread about the effects of capitalism, consumerism and decadence though.

It's not about a hierarchy, I just value human life more because I am one and am able to have different and more in depth relationships with other humans. That's not to say I don't value animal life at all

The migrant story was one of the few things on the news that managed to actually really upset me. I Felt so bad for the migrants because I can imagin dying in those situations must be horrific. I was also disgusted by most people not even giving a **** about them (some cared more about the fact we were funding rescue missions etc) also how people and the media dehumanised them was awful.

With the lion I am more furious and not actually that sad for the loin. I'm furious that people feel so ****ing entitled that they think it's alright to do something like that and for no good reason also just for their entertainment.

Most people are obviously going to go with the lion, our media is nothing if not cruel to the plight of migrants and it doesn't surprise me to see that the person who died in Calais has yet to be named or even humanised in the media. It's hard to get upset about a tragedy when the victim is presented as nothing more than a statistic.
