'Cobra Kai' Overtakes 'Bridgerton' in Nielsen Streaming Rankings

Telemundo's 'Mariposa de Barrio' also becomes the first Spanish-language program to make the weekly top 10.

Netflix's Cobra Kai and Bridgerton remained head and shoulders above the rest of the streaming world for the first full week of 2021, although the two shows swapped rankings from the previous week.

Cobra Kai topped the chart for Jan. 4-10, with Netflix users watching some 2.11 billion minutes' worth of the show's three seasons. Bridgerton slipped one spot to second place with 1.67 billion minutes, down about a billion minutes from the previous week. Cobra Kai lost about 500 million minutes of time.

Of note: Telemundo's Mariposa de Barrio became the first Spanish-language show to crack the top 10, finishing eighth overall and fifth among acquired series. Nielsen notes that the show may have received a recommendation boost from Selena: The Series, as more than a third of the latter's viewers also watched Mariposa de Barrio.

With The Office having moved to Peacock (which is not currently included in Nielsen's rankings) on Jan. 1, Criminal Minds took over as the most streamed acquired show. Netflix viewers watched 842 million minutes of the long-running crime drama. Pixar's Soul remained the No. 1 streaming movie on the four platforms Nielsen features in its rankings, racking up 520 million minutes of viewing time on Disney+.

Streaming platforms contend Nielsen's methodology doesn't capture the full scope of viewing on devices other than TV sets. Nielsen also only measures U.S. audiences, not those in other countries, and currently only includes Amazon, Disney+, Hulu and Netflix in its rankings.

It lost a lot of the heart from the previous two seasons. It also became too contrived with characters acting a certain way just to push the plot in directions that didn't really feel natural.

The kids are all really terrible actors, and even worse martial artists. The only good bits involve the original KK cast.

Does anyone else feel absolutely no chemistry between Daniel and Amanda? They just have no on screen chemistry at all, even though they're fine actors. On top of that she's just always got this miserable, disapproving look on her fact and seemingly constantly has her arms folded.

Some of the looks she gives crack me up. She's often the voice of reason to Daniel.

What I like about it is that it is not cynical. It's about people trying to do the right thing, but not always succeeding.

My only criticisms of Season 3, were I thought the second fight in the final episode was a bit much after...

The fight at the house. (which I heard was originally supposed to be in the Miyagi-do garden, but they couldn't do it because of the weather).

Also watching it again I did notice they repeated some of the scenes from previous seasons. eg. getting the tournament restored was like Johnny getting Cobra Kai reinstated in Season 1.

But that's her entire presence and nothing else; disapproval and snobbishness. Some vibe of love should bleed through but there really is no chemistry. =/ It's like; what attracted them to each other in the first place.

It’s a Karate-based (fantasy karate at that) soap opera, it’s not going for gritty realism so hammy/over the top acting is sort of the point and half the fun .

It was better in the third season and I think the idea is that this is a side of him she hasn’t seen that much of before… his old teenage rivalry resurfacing… and is caused them some genuine marital issues. Though in “show terms” I think she was initially supposed to just function as a grounding element to point out that the whole “warring karate clans” thing, when you actually stop for a second, is ludicrous. They only really started rounding out the character at all in S3.

In fact, I’d say their female characters in general only started becoming more three-dimensional in S3. Which perhaps coincidentally coincides with its move from YouTube to Netflix.

I’m still flabbergasted by the shows 8.6 IMDb rating honestly. I mean, I absolutely loved it, binged the first 3 series faster than I’ve gotten through a show in years, but as I said above it is essentially a soap opera with a relatively low budget and 8.6 is a massive rating for a TV series. Stranger Things (basically one of Netflix’ flagship shows) is 8.7 . Most shows “like this” (half decent ones) would fall around the 7.5 range.

Loved it once again . Everyone getting a redemption arc (even Kreese? ) just in time for silly Miggy to accidentally bring actual gangs/cartel down on them ... it's obviously going to be epic. I called this as soon as his mum mentioned the dad was a dodgy ****er back in S1, he was destined to be a villain (or linked to the introduction of a villain, if it's not him himself).

Oh and calling it now: because it's Cobra Kai, Miguel will DEFINITELY briefly be on his dad's side, before seeing the error of his ways, reconciling with Johnny, and probably teaming up with Robbie to beat up a horde of Cartel goons. Bonus points if Johnny and Daniel are also involved in this rumble.

Also I'm glad someone in the writing room FINALLY got around to watching Karate Kid 3 and the part where Mr Miyagi tells Daniel about how his teachings are to create "strong root" and that he'll ultimately use that to find his own way - because Daniel San has been neglecting that part of the teaching for almost 4 full seasons . It was practically the key theme of that movie!

Another thought I just had... wtf is Johnny doing for money at this point? He has like 10 students and no other job . Even if they were all paying him $100 a month that would be pretty tight to live on...
