People are rushing to supermarkets buying all the water and canned foods
People are fighting at gas pumps to fill their car before anyone else I have put three ice packs in my fridge because I had to open it anyway.

We already have 24 litres of bottled water but I don't think panicking is a good idea. My internet is getting spotty.

A rare atmospheric problem that affected 3 countries, I am not normally a conspiracy theorist but we were also told the LA Fire were due to climate change until they weren't .....sure as hell not going to tell us its a cyber attack, coming hot on the heels of the fire that put Heathrow out of action a few months back I have my doubts
and yes Jess unfortunately people will panic buy and do stupid stuff

Spain-Portugal power outage live: State of emergency declared amid fears blackout could last up to a week
The blackout could have been caused by ‘extreme temperature variations' which caused havoc with the high voltage electricity lines in Spain's interior, suggested Portugal's grid operator REN Spain has declared a state of emergency as the nation and its neighbour Portugal remain in the grips of a power outage. A power blackout hit most of the Iberian Peninsula on Monday around 12:30pm local time which has brought traffic and transport to a standstill, leaving many without water, Wi-Fi or mobile network. The ministry of interior said the emergency status will be applied in the regions that request it, with Madrid, Andalusia and Extremadura asking the central government to take over public order and other functions. More than 20 per cent of Spain’s power has been restored, according to Spanish grid operator Red Electrica, with Portuguese operator REN warning it could take up to a week to restore the power grid fully. While Spain’s prime minister has said the cause of the blackout remains unknown, REN has said there was a "very large oscillation in the electrical voltages, first in the Spanish system, which then spread to the Portuguese system". It’s estimated that millions have been left without power and water in the midst of the blackout, and many travellers were affected by flights grounded to and from the popular holiday destinations. |

being without power in a hot country is a nightmare. On top of the usual stuff, you have no aircon or fans either, making life extremely uncomfortable. It's very unusual for an entire country to suffer a power failure, let alone 2 or 3 so i would definitely say it was a malicious attack

like i said, Portugal and Southern France are also on the same power grid as Spain
what is unusual though is that France has their power restored, although maybe they can also use power from the french based energy suppliers ![]() i think i believe the atmospherical phenomenon more than a possible cyber attack, and good on Portugal's energy provider REN that they did their own investigation, considering this also concerns them very much |

Our local neighborhood has them underground from the neighborhood box to our homes, but the transmission lines and everything up to that point is above ground. It's very expensive to put something like that underground. We have a high water table and then also being the entire city is on a flood plain, there's more obstacles there as well... they've been doing concrete poles here strategically and most they replace are a mixture (I think it's composite material).

Yes, it will cost more to go underground. Sealed pipes away from any Sun damage on them. Not good in a Flood Plain. To avoid this Portugal Horror Maru, imagine being Dumped in In the Middle of nowhere, in that heat. As the Train needed the Electric Power ![]() Last edited by arista; 29-04-2025 at 01:59 AM. |

…it’s still not totally clear what the cause of the blackouts …I know that atmospheric phenomenons have been mentioned but so far as I’m aware that’s unconfirmed…I hope all is not too grim and stressful for Jess atm..

…well, whatever the cause it’s obviously extremely stressful for those living there and going forward now, maybe underground cables will be looked at also…but as always, cost is always a factor with these things, isn’t it…

one good thing, the people will be compensated most likely, as it cannot take longer than 4 hours without power, longer than that you receive compensations, at least that is how it goes in my nation with similar crisisses like these
