I picked the christmas one, just because it was about christmas and wasnt just another xfactor number one,
Getting a christmas number one is only good if you didn't win the xfactor, then you have achieved something, xfactor gets it every year now, boring.

Give me an all girl pop group in the last twenty years who have been so consistently successful both within music and outside it.

They are gold as long as a court order prevents them from singing ballads. Girls Aloud suck a fuck at ballads.

I don't see all the love for it myself. It's a heartless, modern spin on a classic. The original was better in every possible way.

Its 20 years since they first done band aid... and had a 20 year anniversary song to raise money for charity (far more than what was raised 20 years before) so heartless??

They done another cover of it in 1989 i think was that heartless to?

The song wasn't as good as the original no, but it was still better than other rubbish number ones here.

a) Dizzee Rascal's rap was just shite.
b) I hate this whole Bob Geldof/Bono self-righteous 'omg africa's poor' thing.
c) The artists were generally quite disappointing. Joss Stone and The Darkness apart were evil souls, but together...wow. New ears please.

Yes, heartless. I'm not talking about d'charridy, I'm talking about the song. That is what this thread is about, right? And yes, the second Band Aid song was awful too, the worst of the lot. But this one was also horribly conceived and horribly executed, and just looked daft with a lot of the 'hip' young stars in it. Same as with the Live 8 concert in 2005. When you think of Band Aid you think of Freddie Mercury, not young Master Dizzee.

They should do Band Aid 25. It might keep X Factor off the number 1 spot for a year

Why do you think GA have everything? They came from the show Popstars. They are popular because of Simon and the fact this idiot nation eats up processed pop which the X Factor and similar shows churn out. They have everything because they were chosen by the judges.

Simon has nothing to do with Girls Aloud. Louis Walsh was originally their manager but Girls Aloud got shot of him- One True Voice didn't and look where they ended up.

They have everything because they perform well, they have stuck together, and because they have a genuinely amazing team behind them who pick and produce perfect songs for them. It's not as easy as all pop being processed garbage. It's the pop business at the end of the day. Did Elvis write his own material? Do we deny his greatness as a performer?

They're Girls Aloud. Not Radiohead.

Evis had great songs. They don't. Yes they might be able to perform, but can they really sing? Cheryl sure can't.

Ahhh yes, forgot it was before he popped on the scence. Still that was the one that kick off all the dire shows after.

Matter of opinion, surely. Girl's Aloud's better stuff is as good as conventional pop gets, simple as.

Nadine is more than capable of belting out a tune. See : Untouchable.

Simon was about, Popstars and Pop Idol alternated, so it was Popstars one year, then Pop Idol the next, then back to Popstars and the last series of Pop Idol. Thats when X Factor came about.

But noone really cared about Simon, the nasty one in Pop Idol 1 was Pete.

Most people are sensible enough not to compare the two.

Have Spice Girls lasted as long as Girl's Aloud? Have they been half as consistent? Were they half as talented?

It was you who brought Elvis into it! Yes but there was Spice Girls mania and all that. They proved it was not really about talent. GA do not break the mould really. Tweens and pervy Dads are probably their main purchasers.

Yeah, because Elvis did not write his own material thus he was a useful prop in providing clarity in this discussion. I never directly compared the two's music. You may as well compare Nine Inch Nails to The Priests.

Who cares if there was Spice Girls mania? Why is another comparison being made now? If anything it means Spice Girls had this huge flash of hysteria [which they did] then died out soon after [which they did].

Girls Aloud do break the mould in a sense. Remember when I asked you to provide me with another all female pop group who have been as consistent and long lasting as them in the modern age? Besides, pop is not expected to break the mould. Experimental music is.

As for the shocking demographic stereotyping, people of all ages buy Girl's Aloud music. A whole score of legitimate rock artists sing the groups praises. Chris Martin covered one of the groups tracks. Did he do it just because he is a pervy dad?

Ok maybe the Pervy Dad thing was a bit much. But they don't write or produce their own stuff, they have a great team behind them as you said, so he sang a song someone else wrote. I meant breaking the mould as in being different, which they are not, just pretty faced average singers. But alas that sells, but they are no way breaking the mould in anything musical. They are just....there.

Again, I give you Elvis.

Who writes their own stuff should not even come up in a pop debate. It's pop, treat it as such. Again, Girls Aloud, not Radiohead.

They are different. Again, I have no examples of other all female pop groups in the modern age that have lasted as long as they have, do I? They broke the mould in the sense that they have had incredibly longevity for a band that has come from a TV show, where the routine dictates that shelf life is somewhere between two weeks and a year.
