That's the point though, your either into it or your not. I don't see how a film is automatically pompous just because it's not a loud, dumb action movie.

Besides, they didn't suddenly become pompous. The entire Trilogy was conceived as just that - a trilogy. The entire thing was written and planned before the first scene of the first movie was ever shot.

As for alienating the audience, that's what I mean by them not really being fit for mainstream consumption.

Nah, it's was just silliness really, and it didn't help that the actors delivered the lines so earnestly. It was like Jesus of Nazerath meets Mortal Kombat and Tron. Just didn't mix well.

No it wasn't ... it was just the idea of the trilogy. That's what it was. A trilogy designed to make you question the nature of reality and the interchangeable values of good and evil, evolution and causation. To say it was silly is like saying all that ring bollocks in the Lord Of The Rings was silly. Should Keanu Reeves have been on a pogo stick juggling floppy disks when he was questioning The Oracles rhetoric?

It's nothing to do with the lack of action Stu - it's just that the whole thing had a pooey, reverential tone which made it totally unpalatable.

It was meant to have a reverential tone. If it had had a whimsical, slapstick tone the philosophical dialogue would have come off a lot worse.

That's why I'm saying you either had to love the idea of the movies or hate them, but you can't fault the Wachowski's for putting philosophical stuff in there because that was always the intention. Star Wars without space. Shawshank without prison. Matrix without philosophy. It's all the same.

Thirteen definately, saw it a few mnths back, great ending to it.

I'd say Fear And Loathing In Las Vega - wasn't a commercial success but became a cult classic.

Also Stand By Me - never gets enough credit.

The recent Star Wars flicks suffered from the same lack of heart but at least they were entertaining on some level. The two sequels were really poor - pretentious and overblown. I just can't embrace them at all.

I fail to see how they were pretentious in any way, they were always designed to encourage philosophical discussion, it's not Fast & The Furious, but whatever.

Star Wars. Hmm. Tricky out. I think I can enjoy the second two prequels a lot if I manage to forget how great the original trilogy was for a few hours. That's a mighty hard job to do though!

That first one though was diabolical. What in the world.

I actually think I like the second one the best, even though the popular consensus seems to say III.
