Far-right politicians across Europe across Europe celebrated Geert Wilders’ election victory in the Netherlands. His PVV stands at 37 seats in parliament - clearly the largest party, according to ANP’s latest projections. Liberal and progressive politicians in the Netherlands and abroad are looking at the future with trepidation.

“The winds of change are here! Congratulations Geert Wilders on winning the Dutch elections!” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban wrote on X. “The Hungarian model works! Many people in Western Europe would give half their lives if they could have a country without illegal migrants again.”

“Congratulations to Geert Wilders and to the PVV for their spectacular performance in the legislative elections, which confirms the growing attachment to the defense of national identities,” wrote Marie Le Pen of the French party Rassemblement National. “It is because there are people who refuse to see the national torch extinguished that the hope for change remains alive in Europe.”

“Congratulations Geert Wilders,” wrote Santiago Abascal of the right-wing populist party VOX in Spain. “More and more Europeans demand in the streets and at the polls that their nations, their borders, and their rights be defended.”

Italy’s Vice Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, known for his anti-immigration views, wrote on X: “Congratulations to our friend, Geert Wilders, leader of the PVV and historic ally of the League, for his extraordinary electoral victory. A new Europe is possible.”

“Congratulations Geert Wilders!” wrote Tom van Grieken of the Vlaams Belang. “PVV is the largest party in the Netherlands! Everywhere in Europe, we see the same right-wing blowing. It’s time for change.” He also reposted congratulations from other politicians.

Other politicians were less than enthusiastic about the far-right victory. London Mayor Sadiq Khan was particularly critical. “A reminder to progressives everywhere - the continued threat of the far-right is real and on our doorstep,” he wrote on X. “The next year is going to be pivotal for standing up for and defending our values - in London, in Europe, and across the world.”

The left-wing politicians in the Dutch capital are also very concerned. “The far right has won in the Netherlands,” Amsterdam alderman Rutger Groot Wassink (GroenLinks-PvdA) told AT5. “I naturally find that extremely problematic. It is a party that has fascistic tendencies and, let’s say, does not actually consider a large part of Amsterdam residents to be full citizens.” The PVV election program calls to ban Islamic schools and mosques in the Netherlands.

Fellow alderman Marjolein Moorman, also GL-PvdA, pointed out that Wilders has been convicted three times for insulting Muslims. She dreads a PVV member becoming Minister of Education. “I would be very shocked by that. Because they say, for example, that certain schools are no longer allowed to exist.”

National GroenLinks-PvdA leader Frans Timmermans is also distraught. “Now the time has come for us to defend democracy,” he said in an emotional speech, according to NOS. “If you meet someone who wonders after tonight: do I still belong here?” Then say ‘yes’ very clearly!”

The D66 also met the PVV victory with dismay and anger. Be careful of Wilders’ extreme ideals behind his “so-called moderate tone,” party leader Rob Jetten warned Netherlands residents. “The politics of intolerance has been normalized when it should never be normal.” Jetten said VVD leader Dilan Yesilgöz “opened the door wide for Wilders” by no longer ruling out cooperation with him.

It's true that the left have gone crazy.

But the world needs to be careful with who they're electing in each of these countries, because while it's important to protest lunacy, it should be in the hope of finding someone better, which a lot of the time isn't happening.

After the unexpected outcome of the elections, political parties in The Hague must see whether they can form a majority coalition. Outgoing Tweede Kamer president Vera Bergkamp will receive the party leaders at the lower house of the Dutch parliament from 10:30 a.m. to discuss the election results and how to proceed with the Cabinet formation. The aim is to appoint a “scout” to investigate the available coalition options. All eyes will be on Geert Wilders’ PVV.

The PVV is the big winner of the election. Based on the provisional results, Wilders will soon have 37 seats in the Tweede Kamer, more than double what he had after the 2021 election. The PVV is the biggest party by some distance, so the other party leaders will explicitly expect Wilders to take the lead in the formation process. A fake PVV account on X claimed that Wilders appointed Kees van der Staaij of the Christian party SGP to be the scout, but Wilders quickly refuted it.

Achieving a majority will be a complex puzzle: many parties have little interest in cooperating with the PVV or even completely rule out government participation with Wilders.

In addition to the VVD, which kept the door open for Wilders this campaign, the key will lie mainly with Pieter Omtzigt’s NSC. His party won about 20 seats in one fell swoop. Omtzigt first said he could not govern with the PVV because of its program. Hundreds of people gathered in Amsterdam and Utrecht on Thursday evening to protest against fascism, Islamophobia, racism, and anti-queer hatred after Geert Wilders’ PVV won the Dutch election. Demonstrators also interrupted a city council meeting in Midden-Groningen with anti-PVV posters. And the international online campaign network Avaaz launched a petition against making Wilders Prime Minister.

The demonstration on Dam Square in Amsterdam was the initiative of Krakenburg020, an organization of squatters. Hundreds attended to protest for tolerance and inclusion.

Earlier in the evening, dozens of protesters staged a sit-in at Amsterdam Central Station to draw attention to the situation in Gaza. Afterward, they walked across Damrak to Dam Square, waving Palestinian flags to join the anti-PVV protest.

In Utrecht, about 400 people gathered on Stadhuisplein for a protest against the election results organized by the left-wing movement Antifa. About 50 counter-demonstrators also showed up. According to the police, it concerned the hardcore of FC Utrecht. The police kept the two groups separate.

The people who attended the Antifa demonstration, waving rainbow and Palestinian flags, were undeterred by the counter-protesters. They shouted slogans like, “PVV, get rid of it,” “Love over hate,” and “Free Palestine.”

At the request of the organizers, participants took turns speaking. A 70-year-old man of Palestinian origin spoke first and argued for a cordon sanitaire around the PVV. He also called for a national strike. “Just until the government falls.” The idea received much applause.

Another protester said he was at Stadhuisplein to show his solidarity with Muslim compatriots. “I can only imagine what a blow and how frightening this result must be for them,” he said. He wants to convey that everyone is welcome in the Netherlands. A woman spoke of “freedom and equality.”

Before the protest organized by Antifa, there was another demonstration against exclusion on Stadhuisplein, organized by local politicians from GroenLinks and PvdA. That demonstration attracted over a thousand people.

Members of Kick Out Zwarte Piet (KOZP) and Extinction Rebellion (XR) interrupted a council meeting in the municipality of Midden-Groningen. The group of about ten people, including KOZP leader Jerry Afriyie, held banners reading, “Zwarte Piet + PVV is racism,” and chanted slogans like “Down with Zwarte Piet” and “Shame on Groningen.” The council members left the chamber. Some time later, Mayor Adriaan Hoogendoorn allowed the demonstrators to have their say and speak with him briefly. After, they left the town hall under the watchful eye of the police.

The international online campaign network Avaaz launched a signature campaign online under the motto: “Don’t make Wilders Prime Minister.” The open letter to other political parties that may want to work with the PVV was posted online early Thursday evening and received over 14,000 signatures in a short time.

“The unthinkable has happened: the PVV has become the largest party, and Geert Wilders is preparing to become Prime Minister of the Netherlands. But we still have a chance to stop this. 75 percent of Dutch people did not vote for Wilders, and he can only become Prime Minister if other parties are willing to form a coalition with him,” writes Avaas. The action group asks those parties not to work with Wilders.

“Avaaz is standing up to the far right around the world, from the European Union to Brazil - and now we’re doing it in the Netherlands,” Avaaz said.

More actions planned
A broad coalition of civil society organizations will hold a “Gathering for Solidarity” on Dam Square at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The event is all about tolerance, protection of the rule of law, and equal rights for everyone. The organizations stress that this is not a demonstration and call on people to come to Dam Square only with “a light or candle, love, and as many others as possible.”

“Together, we stand for all people in the Netherlands. Shoulder to shoulder. To show that we do not tolerate racism and hatred. We belong together,” Milieudefensie, PAX for Peace, COC Nederland, Greenpeace, the Arts Union, Oxfam Novib, Vluchtelingenwerk Nederland, and the Amsterdam branches of D66, GroenLinks, PvdA, and SP, among others, write. “Our rule of law is under pressure, and we must protect it at all times.”

Several organizations will meet in Amsterdam on Monday to discuss two protests against the PVV’s election win. Abdou Menebhi, involved with EMCEMO (Euro-Mediterranean Center for Migration & Development) and the Collective against Islamophobia and Discrimination, says the plan is to hold a demonstration against “hate speech and populism” on Saturday, December 2, and then gather in various locations and cities on Sunday, December 10, for demonstrations in the context of the International Day of Human Rights.

“The plans for both actions are well advanced. We still have to make a final decision, and we want to involve as many organizations as possible,” said Menebhi. “We want to involve anti-fascists, Muslim organizations, Christians, Jews, trade unions, human rights organizations, and political parties, among others.

The conservative VVD party announced on Friday morning that it will not enter into the next Cabinet. The party did say it would be willing to tacitly support a center-right Cabinet. The decision could make it particularly difficult for the far-right PVV, which outperformed all other parties in this week’s election, to form a new coalition government with a majority of support in either house of Parliament.

VVD leader Dilan Yeşilgöz, also the current justice and security minister, said her decision not to enter the next Cabinet is because of the VVD’s losses during the election. The party currently has 34 seats in the Tweede Kamer, making it the largest faction in the lower house of Parliament.

However, exit polling shows the party will likely lose ten of those seats, making it the third largest behind both the PVV and the left-wing alliance between GroenLinks and Labour (PvdA).

The first VVD-led government with Mark Rutte at the helm was a minority coalition that held a majority with the tacit support from the PVV. But the PVV relatively quickly withdrew its support and the Rutte I Cabinet collapsed just over two years after its formation.

Yesilgöz announced that the VVD wouldn’t be part of the next government shortly before the start of a meeting between the party leaders and Tweede Kamer president Vera Bergkamp - the first step in the Cabinet formation process.

Her announcement is set to infuriate several parties on the more left side of the political spectrum. D66 leader Rob Jetten and Volt leader Laurens Dassen both expressly blamed far-right PVV’s massive election win on the VVD leaving the door open to entering a Cabinet with Geert Wilders’ populist party.

In the latest prognosis, the PVV is the largest party with 37 seats, a massive 20 more than the party had after the 2021 parliamentary election. GroenLinks-PvdA is second with 25 seats. The VVD is the third largest party with 24 seats, ten less than it had before the election.

The VVD’s withdrawal means that all eyes will be on Pieter Omtzigt, whose NSC scored 20 seats in parliament on its first time running. During the campaign, Omtzigt said he wouldn’t rule with the PVV as long as Wilders’ party wanted to ban Islam from the Netherlands, but he dithered on that point after the results came in.
