What are you leaving them extra money for?
if you are honest are you really just doing it because you fear being seen as tight or are you trying to impress someone that you have money to spare? or is it because they have been nice and for some reason you want to pay more for your over priced meal? ![]() What are you "actually" leaving extra money for? Many big chains deduct a percentage of service charges to pay for ‘admin costs’. The big restaurant chains that do this – according to the Unite Union include: Pizza Express, Giraffe, Cafe Rouge and dozens of independently run food establishments. Pizza Express keeps 8 per cent of any tip made with a credit card for ‘admin fees’ while Giraffe and Cafe Rouge keep 10 per cent. There have also been claims that some independent restaurants keep all of the service charge to pay for ‘upkeep’ of the restaurant. Not all restaurants have a service charge included in the bill. I leave a tip of the waiter/waitress gets to keep it all and I always give a cash tip. I do it if their service has been great and they have looked after my needs for the night. It's not s high paid job and most people working in that industry do so for the extra little money from tips. I cannot stand people who do not tip after a good meal and service. It's so rude.

how so Surely good service is what the place pays the employee for? I expect good service in the Spar, the bike shop, my dentist, the bank, amazon etc just because they are walking 20 yards to bring food is no different? |

A restaurant is different from a shop. Your waiter/waitress is with you throughout the duration of your time there usually attending to your every need to make sure you have an enjoyable meal and evening since you have decided not to cook for yourself that night. They are kind of like your mini butler if you will. If they have given you a lovely evening then yes it's rude not to leave them a little extra seeing as most restaurants don't pay very highly.

they take your order and bring the food and say "is everything alright?" giving them money for that is rather bizarre maybe if folk stopped this silly tradition they would get better wages |

Also non tippers I wouldn't recommend going to the same restaurant twice. The waiters and waitresses generally remember who tips and who doesn't, so expect barely average service if you return.
I grew up in hospitality and ran a restaurant so I know how it all works

Yes but you also get them getting you a good table if you ask, more drinks, making sure your meal is okay, getting anything else you may need whilst also having to attend ten other tables to make sure everything gets to you promptly. If they don't bring your food as soon as it's cooked it just sits under a hot plate until they do it, nobody else will bring it for them. A lot of places they also have to make the drinks and deserts as well as clear plates from you so you are not sat there for ages with dirty plates, clean tables, lay tables, polish cutlery, take payments. You are sadly mistaken if you think it's by any means an easy job, and ten hours of that is exhausting yet you still have to smile and be nice.

I guess you never worked in hospitality or go to crappy places to eat then if your service is mediocre? That or they know you're a non tipper and so don't really care about your evening so give you the most basic of service

Whenever my family goes out for a meal we always leave a tip for the server, it's the nice thing to do for someone who has made sure your experience at the establishment was enjoyable.
