I do agree also but it's a big if and I don't want to tempt fate I've been impressed with Milliband's party conferences the last couple of years, he needs to translate the attitude he displayed there on a more mainstream scale so perhaps during the TV debates

If nothing else I hope there's an increased turnout

How?... I don't know! He must have a lot of friends in high places and promised some a huge slice of something for backing that's all I can say.
I partly blame Nick Clegg for setting up the opportunity for those Euro debates with Nigel Farage, since then all we have had on TV is UKIP really as main political news.

UKIP were nowhere near in the general election but they were second in the Euro elections 2009 so anti-EU sentiment isnt anything that new and its only increased in the last few years. UKIP are appealing because they're the only largeish party who offers a clear exit option from the EU so it's hard to see them going away any time soon.

Oh it just makes me sick how they appeal to the 'homeowners' sitting there bleating about Romanians not bothering to question any of the other questionable ideals they hold.
How 'British' will it be when we all have to get private healthcare as he's flogged the NHS to serco?

UKIP are popular because they are tapping into media created and perpetuated ideas and fears about immigration and Europe and it's saddening. They're presenting themselves as this protest, 'stick it to the man' party for the working class when actually if the people that are deciding to vote for them did a bit more research they'd realise UKIP policies were going to be anything but beneficial for them...

I mean I know of people/people's parents that are left-wingers/socialists and have voted UKIP, there's loads of people whose politics shouldn't be anywhere near UKIP yet they've been brainwashed into thinking it is

It's just sad

One thing I will say though is I have noticed a hell of a lot of anti-UKIP sentiment among people my age over the last few weeks and I don't think I've seen a single person say anything positive about them. I've been quite surprised actually, either expected people to be jumping on the bandwagon because they don't really understand politics or just not commenting at all but there's been a lot of negative posts on social media about them and a lot of piss taking in real life too. Refreshing and calming to see

Definitely not a good one and I fear more likely surprises to come, Labour should have taken this one but there was only a single seat change overall.

I think it's already clear that where they are standing, UKIP will do really well tonight unfortunately.

The good thing is that hopefully they don't run any council after all the results and that this maybe does, just a year away from the 2015 election, wake the other parties up to the dangers of underestimating UKIP.

I really doubt we are going to learn a great deal today from these elections.

In the general election, all parties will be getting far more airtime while the run up to these elections today have seen UKIP plastered, good and bad, over the TV screens for weeks.

I expect UKIP will however do very well indeed.
Also if Labour gain more than 200 council seats and the Consersvatives lose same, although that is hardly a great move,it would represent that no way will the Conservatives win the 2015 election on such figures.

Sorry Nedusa,I love your posts and agree a great deal of the time with you as you know but I could never vote UKIP, I am firmly a supporter of the EU even with it's faults and I recall my Grandfather saying to me that in his view the EU was a good thing too,he saw the 2nd world war as a hopefully final means to end wars in Europe for good.
In his view, the EU has helped that process in the joining of Nations together.
A different take on why such wars were fought but for me I cannot support anti EU parties.

I certainly also don't want any referendum on the EU until we are 100% sure of getting the full info as to the EU,(the great benefits from it as well as the unpopular things too, fairly debated and relayed by the media and govt.to us), which could have us sleepwalk out of the EU.
No problem Joey, everyone has their view, I for one have no problem with being in a European trading alliance as we do trade with Europe more than any other country. But I like a large number of people are dismayed at how the Common Market has evolved into a European Federal superstate without any discussion from the British public.

The fact that we the GBP were never ever asked to vote on this sea change to Britains identity is thing that upsets people the most.

To be forced to sit on the touch lines and watch your country give up its sovereignty piece by piece is the reason why, as I type this at 7.30am results are showing massive gains for UKIP in the council elections which are sure to be repeated if not exceeded in the European elections.

What's the point of democracy if your elected leaders exclude the voting public in such a major change to the direction of the future of the United Kingdom, and then rub salt into the wound by stating that normal people do not understand what is best for them.

Is it any wonder that normal working class people are angry at being treated this way for decades and have registered that anger with a protest vote for UKIP.

Hopefully this will finally make the major parties in this country sit up and take notice.

Yes I agree Nick Clegg and LBC radio must take some of the credit in finally getting the message out to the public at large.
