Then all you do is have a strict zero tolerance policy in every area of the forum other than the private area. If any kind of argument breaks out on the main board after the issue has been resolved in the said section, they're just banned for a week or something. The idea would be that if a debate turns into an argument in a thread, then it's stopped and sent to the private area where it can continue for as long as needs be. The PM idea is perfectly reasonable but when there's still rules governing that it doesn't solve anything either?

If you let people have an area to really go to town and sort out their differences, I think in the end people would laugh it off and it would end up solving a lot of problems. Sweepings things under the carpet and not allowing issues to be resolved, no matter whether that takes a slanging match or not, just festers more problems than it solves because people still have issues with each other and aren't allowed to go at it to sort them out

If nothing else I think it should be trialled for a couple of weeks, this idea has been suggested so many times that it may as well at least be given a go to see who is right or wrong about whether it'll work or not

The private area idea wont work and wont be given a go no matter how much it's brought up we have been through all this before.

There has been a couple of occasions where we have took a step back and let things run there course and that never worked, reports were coming in constantly and people were blaming us asking where we were and why we never stepped in.

Seriously if people want to argue with other members so much then they can go find somewhere else to do it.

It sounds like a pig of an idea, to be honest. Sanctioning a public bloodbath forum just to satiate some nutters need to have their conflict viewed in a public space. Why would anybody even want to promote that kind of carry on, let alone the people to whom the maintenance of the site is held accountable to?

How would it work? It would take the novelty out of spontaneous arguments. Do I set up a thread saying "Hey joeysteele, I'm calling you out, bro".

It's just childish. We don't even have a decent pedigree of argumentative members to make it work. It would just be unending catcalls and gifspam.

I think the Great Argument of 2010 proved that a free for all argument doesn't make the situation any better. Whatsoever. Ha2

Yep, I was just talking about that as an example earlier in the admin section actually. We ended up getting blamed for not stepping in as well, which would happen here as well

Since this is obviously directed at me

1) I have been infracted for things that have concerned you before, so don't assume that I haven't. Thanks

2) I know 18 isn't old but being referred to as the 'youngsters' as if we're some little bunch of yobs that terrorise TiBB and all of its lovely, respectable, squeaky clean older members during on-season is quite patronising and now that I'm writing it also quite hilarious, please stop it

3) Age is completely irrelevant when it comes to who gets into trouble on here. I could quite easily sit here and say that there's a hell of a lot of 'older' members that have caused many problems on this forum in the last few months, and I would be correct, but there have been many young, gay, female, religious, atheist, black, white people that have done the same...do you not see what I'm getting at? Age is irrelevant, so are all of these other categories. Individuals cause problems, not social groups determined by factors beyond those individuals control (age being the example here). What's next? 'Those ****ing greedy bi's on TiBB are ruining the forum with their rude attitudes'? You wouldn't get away with categorising anyone else and accusing them of causing the problem, so why is age any different?

Of course you would! I'm all for healthy debate and civilised disagreements, but it would end up in name calling, pettiness and all round hysteria.

I'd much rather sort stuff out via PM myself as I alluded to in my last post, but the rules still apply there. The problem is that if I were sent a PM with insults in then hey fair enough it's just the internet, but I could hypothetically send one back with the same kind of content and that person could report it? That's not really fair and isn't really resolving anything. If you scrap the rules for private messaging and just pretend it's like some messaging service that's not part of the forum then yeah, I'd have no problem and it would probably work. The odd occasion when I've taken an argument to PM it has been resolved, but there are just the odd couple of members that have issues with me and to an extent vice versa and if we could just be allowed to say what we really want to say without repercussions, I think in the end the problem would either be resolved, or we'd just conclude that it's best to stay away from each other. We wouldn't even need to be having this discussion if the idea of a no holds barred forums would just be implemented for private messaging, I'd be more than happy with that. The forum idea has only been suggested because PM'ing is no different to the main board rules

Arguments would still break out on the main board, they'd just be told to go to the specified thread in a subsection or something. That way not only would the people who don't like threads going off-topic have their issues resolved with the thread getting back on track, but the people who have long standing issues with each other would at least be able to go into depth about how they feel without feeling they're going to be silenced. In the end that really doesn't resolve anything because the problem is still there, it only gets resolved (or at least people mutually agree to stay clear of each other) when people have the opportunity to say what they wish. You'd of course get members that are disagreeing about the latest Strictly elimination going in there and going 'well I hope you die you ******' but that comes with the territory the point of it would be to try and resolve the petty, longstanding problems that certain people have with each other on here by allowing them to say what they wish, and it can only stay in that one private section (where it's not ~spoiling the forum for guest browsers), if someone drags it up again on the main board then you go all ghetto on their ass and just ban them. The current system whereby people are infracted and posts get deleted when arguments break out just means that those involved haven't really finished what they started and it's only going to start up some other time

And I say all of this as someone which would probably enter this on the first day to make two lengthy posts about two members, try and resolve the issue and then never return again.

But it wouldn't happen since in the past when you may have let things carry on there are still rules that are in place which give people the right to complain. A no-holds-barred forum would have no rules (well, I'd say other than no attacks on people's personal lives, appearance and obviously the standard no racist/homophobic etc etc), so anyone stepping into it either to read or partake who then complains, well they have no ground to stand on since by that point the point of the forum would have been made clear and that there were no rules governing it. People have no right to complain if it's clear that people are free to go at it as they wish
