And the BBC sci-fi's new showrunner Chris Chibnall has revealed that he always wanted to cast a woman as The Doctor.
"After months of lists, conversations, auditions, recalls and a lot of secret-keeping, we're excited to welcome Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor," he said. "I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman, and we're thrilled to have secured our number one choice.

One thing I do think is important though, is that she doesn't play the doctor as feminine. I don't think it matters whether The Doctor is male or female, for the character, but a major reason for that is that The Doctor is not masculine. He's not some big gruff blokey bloke... if anything, he's almost "effeminate" (I know this is no longer a PC term
) in a lot of his mannerisms, especially Smith and Capaldi, but even Tennant and Eccleston. In fact it made the "Doctor Donna" scenes quite fascinating as she mirrored Tennant's Doctor-mannerisms really convincingly, without her seeming masculine or him feminine. So long as they stick with that I don't think the biological gender will matter much at all. Despite those videos ranting about how The Doctor "is male!", he's not actually a very "male" character at all. |

Yeah. We've yet to have her meet a Doctor she didn't recognise.

She didn't recognise Capaldi! That was like... The plot of the whole episode. She thought he was some random human doctor and even "stole" the TARDIS with him, letting slip that she "does it all the time and he never knows". Also gives that big speech about him not realising he's stood right next to her (then realises).
Your memory is terrible sir! I don't think she had ever seen Tennant before her first episode either, as in theory that episode would follow the final time she saw Capaldi, and she had otherwise only seen Smith. She did realise who he was straight away that time, but at first thought he was an older (than Capaldi) Doctor before realising "how young" he was (the youngest she had ever seen him). And she "died" in that episode, so their first/last meeting. However she is still alive with her consciousness stored in the Library, so it's feasible that they could devise a way to bring her back into a physical body at some point. |

I just want Christmas to come and go so that we can get started on this. I'll miss Capaldi so much, I actually prefer him to Smith and I loved Smith but this is such a new era for the show.

I wouldn't be surprised if Moffat had already planned on bringing River back for the Christmas special, given that it's his final episode. But going against the popular opinion I'd prefer it if they left River in the past, since her story is complete now.

I dunno, Clara (along with Missy) is pretty much a defining part of the Capaldi era, like much more so than Bill and Nardole who are more optional extras. River, despite appearing first in a Tennant episode and last in a Capaldi episode, is very much a Smith-era character along with Amy and Rory.
