Personally, I hate it. Every time I switch on an American television show, they seem to stereotype British people as having posh accents and being, well, camp. Anyone else hate it?

Whenever I've been to America, I've always found they love the British accent.

posh accents and big teeth is the main steriotype, but then we steriotype all Americans as fat trailor trash burger eaters so it balances itself out

Yeah it irritates me sometimes when they seem to think we all live in huge townhouses, have a butler and have super posh accents. Its so unrealistic.
![]() But then again, we stereotype them too, so.

Each nation has there stereotypes.
Welsh - sheep sh*ggers. Inbred valleys. Scottish - fat. lazy. Irish - drunks. crazy. English - posh. teenage pregnancies. arrogant. This is all pure ignorance, and it only thats a little bit of maturity and the chance to get to know people on this forum from those nations to realise that it's all BS and ridiculous. Except for Ben who is posh, and I'm sure has 5 children already and always boasts about it ![]() Last edited by Marc; 18-02-2012 at 11:58 AM. |

Yes.
![]() They make Brits out to be creeps who wear top hats and ugly dresses and drink tea with the Queen 24/7. ![]() Honestly, they make it look like everyone from the UK is a stuck up bellend who doesn't know how to have fun, when that's basically what Americans are like.

I'd say they have a pretty good idea what Scottish and N.Irish are like. Not sure about the Welsh.

Well I think it's mainly to do with wanting the masses to understand any foreign accents. It's pretty insular but not many Americans travel outside of their own country on holiday and the producers of said shows seem to think they won't understand any regional dialects so it's best to keep it crisp and clear like the Queen.
Adele said when she appeared in Ugly Betty they made her put on a fake accent when speaking, she was so embarrassed she'd never do it again. lol. And Jaime Murray was told she didn't sound British enough for the audience so had to do a fake one even though she has a relatively posh accent anyway. The number of forums I've been on for shows like Lost etc aswell and the American posters are talking about "that British chick" or whatever and she was actually Australian just shows how ridiculous it is. Yes it was the same when I went, they all obsessed over the fact that I had a british accent and seemed to love it. My cousins are American and they are complete anglophiles (right word?) they just love everything associated with the uk/british people and visit every year, sometimes twice a year!

Big teeth? I thought we were stereotyped for having bad teeth because we were behind America when it came to the "cosmetic dentistry" to get perfectly aligned blindingly white teeth.

LOL...you've just reminded me of the movie 'In Brugus' with the stereotyped 'large, loud and brightly dressed American tourists' who Colin Farrell was being rude to...I don't know if you've watched the movie.....but LOL, yes we stereotype them
