This will be a shock
to family shoppers [Price-slashing supermarket deals on junk food will be banned from today as part of the Government's long-delayed crackdown on obesity. 'Buy one, get one free' offers on sweets, crisps, sugary drinks and other snacks will be outlawed in England, alongside free refills of fizzy drinks in restaurants and cafes. The rules apply to supermarkets, bigger high street shops and online retailers, and come after years of delays amid the cost-of-living crisis.] ![]() [Greg Fell, president of the Association of Public Health Directors, welcomed the move, calling it 'long overdue' but warned it was only a first step. 'Multi-buy promotions don't save people money—they encourage them to spend more. They normalise buying more, and more often,' he said. Read More Scientists pinpoint exact age you'll be obese for life article image Research has shown such restrictions can work. A University of Leeds study found that after supermarkets were banned from placing unhealthy items at checkouts and aisle ends in 2022, sales dropped by around two million products a day.] https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/a...ls-banned.html Last edited by arista; 01-10-2025 at 04:32 PM. |

It's bloody ridiculous. My shopping for myself and kids (fri-sun) is now usually around 120 a week. I don't remember wether it shot up or if it's crept up over time but when I first moved here and had the kids all week I only used to spend 60-70

Meanwhile shrinkflation in absolutely everything continues to go unchallenged by the powers that be... funny that, isn't it? Every policy introduced regarding "unhealthy eating" seems to ever-so-conveniently line the pockets and profits of Tesco, ASDA etc. The cost of essentials (that are in and of themselves, not "unhealthy" - meat, pasta, rice, fruit, cereals, tinned goods, bread, oil, tea and coffee) continue to go up despite already being 3x the price of what they were 10 years ago.
