Default Forced marriage: Mum guilty of making daughter wed older Pakistani man

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england...ngham-44211541

This is a first

"A Mother who forced her daughter to marry a relative almost twice her age has been convicted in the first successful prosecution in England."

"The girl "has been let down badly by her mother, whose love and attention she craves," prosecutor Deborah Gould said.
The mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, looked shocked as she was convicted of forced marriage and of deceiving the victim to go to Pakistan in order to enter into a false marriage.
She was also convicted of perjury, after she lied about the incident in the High Court."

Its so wrong
so many other forced marriages
are still going on.

Good that she has been convicted, it shouldn't happen so hopefully it will send out a message that ,that, is not how we do things here, hopefully others will follow suit.

About time. We will not put up with that in the West. How long will it be I wonder before people start screaming it’s a cultural/religious right to treat women this way - and some sexist idiot will defend it.

It seems no coincidence to me though that the first to be convicted is a woman. This is largely male abuse committed by many men but the first to be convicted is a woman. Smells a bit off to me.

...it does actually say in the article Brillo, that a male was convicted and jailed in 2015...so maybe he was the first conviction after it became illegal in 2014..?...and at least one other case is ongoing atm...which could also be a case against a male as well...

Is this one small step forward in reasserting British law, values and customs upon communities who have certain traditions which, quite frankly, belong in the 'Dark Ages'.

Three thousand phone calls per month from frightened young girls to Karma Nirvana - an organisation supporting victims of honour-related abuse and forced-marriage - in the West Midlands alone shows the magnitude of this horrific practice, whilst only a handful of prosecutions shows that we are FAILING these young British Citizens, but at least this conviction is a step in the right direction.

...I think what Arista means with it being a first...is that it’s the first time a mother has been convicted as oppose to a father...not the first case ever to have a conviction in the U.K...

Me too - but I will be happier when the men (the real culprits in this) are convicted.

Thanks Ammi - I didn’t see that. The authorities don’t seem to have done much though considering it has been illegal for four years and is a considerable problem. I can’t imagine how terrifying it must be for those poor young girls forced to marry men, often old enough to be their fathers/grandfathers. How a mother can do that her her own daughter is beyond me.

I don't think that's necessarily true to be fair, it's usually both parents who are involved in an arranged marriage, and actually quite often the mother who is tasked with finding a "suitable partner". Though you could argue that they are merely being subordinate.

It is surprising, that in a very patriarchal community, the first conviction is female. But it's a conviction, and I hope she's sentenced to a decent period of time.

While this is a very welcome step in getting rid of archaic practices that have no place in this country, and while it sends a message to the perpetrators... still no conviction for FGM. According to statistics there are over 100,000 women in the UK living with FGM and although it's been outlawed here since 1985, there have been zero convictions and sadly, women and girls are still at risk in one of the most developed countries in the world.

Just more proof of how 'PC' has successfully impacted upon the policies of those who are in authority here.

Exactly - and more appropriate in the eyes of some that women (who represent 50% of the population) come bottom of the pile when it comes to priority. One patriarchal society looking out for another in my opinion. Women lose again!
