A lot of my friends had one because they had been told (by tv licensing) that even if you do not watch TV...if you have a device capable of watching live TV you have to pay it too..which again, is utter bollocks

Well, the rule is if you watch any live television as it is broadcast or watch a BBC catch-up service ie. iPlayer.

Other catch up services, streaming services or other recorded programmes after broadcast you don't need one.

So, if they have a TV with an aerial and claim they never switch it on then that's a bit of a fib.
