I find the bizarre thing with new Sci Fi though... is that CGI has become so much easier to do well these days. So any and all random little Sci Fi shows - no matter how low the quality of the writing - still LOOKS amazing. Whereas back in the olden days it was the opposite - some really well-written and acted shows had absolutely shocking special effects and prosthetics . Season 1 Buffy ...

This one for example, the writing is actually OK, the acting is mixed (some is great some is questionable) but the effects quality is better than you'd have seen in a lot of high-budget Hollywood movies even 10-15 years ago.
