FBI arrests white supremacist allegedly plotting to bomb Colorado synagogue
Richard Holzer was arrested Friday after undercover agents brought him supposed explosives.

The FBI says it has arrested a white supremacist who was planning an attack on a Colorado synagogue, describing the plan as “domestic terrorism”.

Richard Holzer, 27, of Pueblo, Colorado, is accused of plotting to attack the city’s Temple Emanuel synagogue. His co-conspirators included two undercover (UC) FBI agents.

Holzer allegedly expressed a desire to “get that place off the map”, and was not concerned if anyone would be hurt in the attack because they “would be Jews”.

He allegedly said that the bombing would be “a move for our race”.

Holzer was arrested on 1 November in Pueblo, after he had gone to a motel with two undercover agents to pick up explosives.

Holzer allegedly described the pipe bombs and sticks of dynamite proffered by the agents – actually dummies manufactured by the FBI at Quantico – as “absolutely gorgeous” and said they should go ahead with the attack overnight to avoid police. Earlier in the evening, he had displayed a Nazi armband and produced a copy of Adolf Hitler’s book Mein Kampf, a mask, and a knife from a backpack, according to authorities.

In a press conference Monday afternoon, Dean Phillips, the special agent in charge of the FBI in Colorado, said that the agency had started investigating Holzer after receiving a tip in September about his social media behavior. Then followed more than a month in which FBI agents posing as fellow white supremacists led Holzer to reveal the extent of his violent beliefs and fantasies.

Holzer made contact on Facebook with an FBI Online Covert Employee (OCE) who was posing as a female supporter of white supremacy in late September. He allegedly sent pictures of himself adorned with white supremacist symbols, a video of him wielding a machete, photos of him apparently urinating on a Jewish center, and another video of him wielding a knife, saying “**** antifa”.

He repeatedly expressed beliefs indicating virulent antisemitism and a deep inculcation in the beliefs of the white supremacist movement, according to the court documents. He allegedly told the undercover agent was preparing for “racial holy war”.

He also claimed to have paid a “Mexican cook” $70 to “hex and poison a local synagogue” and said the the cook had put arsenic in the synagogue’s water pipes, the court documents said.

The agent offered to introduce Holzer to “friends” visiting Colorado, who were in reality undercover agents. Online, he explained to one of them a plan to once again poison the synagogue.

On 17 October, undercover agents arranged a restaurant meeting with Holzer and his friend “Skeeter”. Holzer allegedly arrived with white supremacist paraphernalia as gifts, reiterated his belief in a holy war, and said he had paid a “witch doctor” to curse the synagogue.

He then canvassed the possibility of attacking the building with Molotov cocktails, in order to “vandalize the place beyond repair” and to do something that “tells them they are not welcome in this town”, according to investigators. The exchange was peppered the exchange with antisemitic slurs, according to the documents. Holzer, Skeeter and the undercover agents then cased the synagogue.

In subsequent online conversations, Holzer allegedly solicited the supply of more powerful explosives from the agents. He met with one of them on 31 October and made a plan to meet at the motel the following night in order to carry out the plot, which would involve bombing the synagogue in the early hours of Saturday 2 November.

When he showed up at the planned meeting, Holzer was arrested. In interrogation, according to the affidavit, he admitted to the plot, calling the plan “my mountain”, and described Jews and the synagogue as a “cancer”.

In a press conference on Monday, the Colorado US attorney, Jason Dunn, said Holzer had been charged with obstructing persons in the enjoyment of their free exercise of religious beliefs, through force and the attempted use of explosives and fire, which carries a possible penalty of 20 years in prison.

Holzer remains in federal custody. His next hearing will take place on 7 November.

It's funny that the right wing response to right wing extremism is always to defend it by pointing the finger at the left. The tribalism of the right wing is weird, they'll defend would be terrorists by using flawed whataboutism regarding the left when, if a left winger did something like this, they would be openly condemned by the left.

The left holds people accountable, the right look after their own, regardless of who they are and what they've done.

At the end of the day, let's be glad that this right wing terrorist failed miserably in his actions.

It's really bizarre, why can't the genuine reported fact that this is a far right problem be addressed without the intimation without substantion that its actually the left at fault?

It's not that its simply a form of gaslighting. . All you have to be is conscious of the facts.. don't get dragged into what ifs, hypotheticals, have actual evidence denounced as nonsense and above all don't accept skewed opinion as fact.
I'm glad this was foiled too, there is a concentration of evil bubbling to the surface and every now and again bubbles of hate pop at certain groups. We are aware of the propaganda and the language used to curry this hate and yet for the most part turn a blind eye when it's right under our nose. ( just my opinion obv)

The bolded bit is the problem. We don't really have free media anymore, so when they have RW media telling them untruths that already feed into the suspicion they've been fed for decades, then they accept the wrong facts really easily.

When a select group of billionaires own the majority of the media, then it's easy to understand why so many people are misinformed, which leads on the next big issue; challenging our own truths. People like to have their own beliefs massaged rather than challenged. Brexit provides all the evidence for this. No one can say anything positive about what brexit will bring, they just know that they want it because they voted for it.

This "left wing are the real anti semites" nonsense would be hilarious if it wasn't so damaging to the people that should actually know better. Are there anti semites on the left? Yes, absolutely. Irrational beliefs/prejudices are part of every group, idea, or philosophy, but this fairly recent political projectionism where the right successfully paints all of their actions onto "the other side" is the most nefarious and dangerous of the day.

It's not an obsession, it's been creeping under cover for years, as they pointed the fingers solely at Muslims. The thread is about a specific incident that happened, that then a couple of people tried to turn it into a left wing problem.

I think those of us that do discuss it, only want the same thing as you; for it to be called out and treated as dangerous as it actually is.

That my little champignon is because it is the ultimate evil or as evil as it has gotten in recent history... Whether you choose to face it or not in the western world far right terrorism has a political agenda that is gathering pace.

Then it makes sense to forgo that media spin and instead seek out the direct quote or fact from elsewhere. I don't see the reason to trust or defend the far right either or downplay the threat they pose by suggesting that the left is in some way equally as nefarious with no evidence to back these claims.

The phrase ' question everything' is socially and politically needed now more than ever, we cant as you say rely on truth from the media so it falls to us to seek out the truth from the spin. This is why the unions are looked down on or any group that band together and challenge the status quo as extolled by the tabloids, these are used to great effect as a form of informal social control.

Like a number in a colour blindness test, once you see it you can never unsee it and other examples of propaganda or buzzwords leap off the page or screen at you.
