In the elderly home I visit a lot some of them say things that are completely unacceptable (mostly sexism towards female staff that I've witnessed) but when this is explained to them by staff some of them really dont seem to understand why.

Absolutely, but there is a clear and obvious gap in age between "when slavery was legal" and "whenever this woman's youth was", let alone the gap between then and now. To try and pass this comment - "bring back slavery" - as a difference in generations today is just insanely myopic.
