The idea of running apprenticeships in a sort of Uni-style living environment is actually a really good one though . Academia definitely isn't for everyone but people who go straight into a trade or vocation do miss out on that "uni experience" (which really has very little to do with the classes). A sort of "Halls of residence for apprentices" makes a lot of sense.

The rates of pay with apprenticeships are an issue in some cases, unless you have support how can you afford to live?
I admit haven't paid much attention to them for a while but I remember reading that one was around £3ph... if that's still the case they are quite limiting.
