Very overly simplistic; she was clearly suffering from complex mental health issues and that's what caused the initial incident, and eventually lead to her suicide.

But the fact that she was clearly unstable is really exactly why the press should have backed off a bit.

That said, I will be honest and say that I think you're right; a male celebrity who viciously assaulted his girlfriend and then went on to commit suicide would not have anything like the same support/grief as there has been with Caroline.

Of course that doesn't mean it shouldn't be there in this case; just that people should always view these situations with more nuance.
