Honestly the vast majority of E3 has been the online hype for YEARS now... the conference itself seems generally unecessary for the big devs, people are waiting with for these things to drop. I was reading the other day though that it's not so good for medium-sized and larger independents though, because the games journalism sector turns up for the big reveals giving the smaller guys a chance to "catch their eye" and maybe get an article on a larger site. Though one pointed out that it could be seen as an opportunity to encourage Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo to do more in support of smaller developers.
