It sounds great in theory but in reality, as soon as furlough ends a lot of these companies are going to go under anyway (there are overheads beyond wages) and staff will be out of a job within a month or two.

Ill be honest and say that right now working from home (with kids around) is difficult, and having my wife still out of the house for work 3 days a week isn't UNscary, but on balance I'm less scared about that than I am about what comes after this for a lot of people. Happy that we're both in secure employment that's still active and functioning even if it means we don't get to Covid-hybernate.

Furlough is being touted as security but in reality it's a very unsteady position to be in, and I imagine most people would rather keep working.

The pay still comes via your employer as normal though, you get your normal payslip etc, the company then gets that money back from the government. In that sense it's very different to claiming directly from the government.

these footballers would keep their full salaries, while in other sports lower ranked players struggle financially (made a thread in sports section btw about that)

reduce those salaries at least half, here in our dutch football clubs also gotta do that, in serie a from top team Juventus also many players had reduced their salaries in this time of crisis

Barcelona did the same too for their men's and women's teams

I imagine part of the problem is probably a legal challenge though. These big players aren't salaried in the traditional sense, they sign a specific contract for a set amount over a set time period... If the club goes outwith the terms of the contract, the contract is broken and the player is free to go elsewhere.

Technically that applies to salary renegotiations too but the big difference is that a large chunk of "big name" players money is given as a signing fee which they wouldn't have to give back.

Now of course... If these multi-millionaire players are not complete and utter dicks, they should be happy to have the salaried club staff paid wages out of their money. If a couple of them banded together they could probably pay the salaries themselves quite comfortably.

Money has ruined top league football. Much more enjoyment in the lower leagues these days. Come on you Orient....

What a spiteful and greedy bunch of people surely they could take a pay cut to stop people losing their jobs.

Boris should actually force them to take a pay cut to pay for the other staff.
I normally like Tottenham, but they're not covering themselves in glory here imo.

Even a minor drop in wages for every player would make some difference, I hope that they change their minds.

Hopefully our players don't copy Tottenham on this.

The likes of LT won't admit it but from an outside perspective, Rangers fans were having a LOT more fun when they got punted right to the rock bottom of the leagues and the Celtic rivalry was on pause for a few years.

Liverpool have now joined them in doing so. Shame that two of the biggest football clubs in the country are taking advantage of this Government scheme, but every penny counts for them I suppose.

Especially when their captain has been working wonders trying to help the NHS.

I posted about this in his Henderson thread. Agreed, and really disappointed in the club for doing it. They can afford it so they should pay them.
