10 years for defacing a statue is madness. One of the problems with racial inequality is the broken justice system, and this only makes it worse.

I can't give a full breakdown because I just don't know enough, but I do know that pretty much 50% (42% for accuracy) of all people in prison were expelled from school, so that seems like a common sense starting point to me, especially when it equates to bout 1% in the total population.

I'd also pass a law instantly that removes any kind of profit from the prison system, because the prison population has exploded by 82% over a generation, without a corresponding rise in crime to even attempt to explain why.

We have the largest prison population in Western Europe.

Agree on both counts. Schools should have a lot more investment put into them.

I once read a tinfoil hat type theory that said more men end up in jail because they're on average stronger, and can therefore be used for more prison labour Sounds bonkers but there may be a grain in there somewhere.

As an example, in the US prisoners get to work as firemen, that the state then uses in times of excess need or emergencies. So these prisoners, earning cents each day, are working alongside trained firemen, but when they leave prison, they are unable to go and do that job because the fire service requires an EMT qualification, but you can't get that if you have a criminal record. It's little more than corporate slave labour.

I forgot to add I don't necessarily think the ten years should actually happen in all cases, but if that's a guideline law then the vandals would at least face a trial, and it would appear on their criminal record.

I agree, this is a knee jerk reaction, the establishment is crumbling but heavy handed tactics like that won't work this time.
Usually the right use war memorials to stir national pride to rail against protestors, that in the main isn't happening now.. we are quite rightly demanding some accountability.
