SURELY Sony would want you to send them the defective one if they're replacing...

...although my wife did almost get two brand new iPhones once, because the delivery fella left the first one in a recycle bin TWO DOORS DOWN and marked it as delivered. Phone company thankfully believed that it never turned up and sent a replacement - then about a week later, the neighbour (who had been off on holiday) knocks the door with the first one. We were honest though and sent it back to the phone company
