She has had dementia for 10 years...she was in hospital and probably on 'end of life'...he requested his family didn't tell him until he left should this happen. No doubt they wouldn't go ahead with funeral arrangements until afterwards.
Had this been a sudden unexpected death then they would have told him. It's quite understandable.
