Merkel: germany won't get through winter with current covid-19 measures, calls for even stricter measures, since south and south-west of the nation there are still loads of new cases daily so Bavaria region moves into tougher lockdown

and also who in germany will receive first vaccine jabs and when

i also saw a interview on RTL with Professor Kahler and he did a test with all sorts of face masks, and this one FFP2 came out the best, 95% effectiveness, a test with smoke, and no smoke came through that one, which means covid virus can also not get through that one, but you need to wear the mask properly at all times, and he also says wearing protective glasses might be good either

Is it cause for cautious optimism? Sure, but there's a phrase about "counting chickens" that springs to mind on this one, and as always my worry is the social effect of people firmly believing we've now "beaten Covid" if we in fact have not.
much depends on the percentage of the world population gets vaccinated. If its high, then the need for repeat vaccinations would reduce as the virus would have much less chance of mutating. We may need to get another one in a years time to take account of the transition to a vaccinated state across the world population

It seems unlikely that large proportions of the world's population will be vaccinated at once given that;

1) Even countries like the UK will not manage to orchestrate an effective fast rollout. People worry about "those who don't want to take the vaccine" but it's a moot point - it will take 6 months to a year to get even the 2/3 of the population that wants to be vaccinated done - quote me on that later

2) Rich countries have bought up vast stocks of all of the vaccines (in some cases 10x more than necessary) because we can, leaving little to none for the less wealthy (highly populated) countries because... well... that's the world. Unless we start giving them away, "the world" isn't getting vaccinated.

Our selfish best hope is that the vaccine is very successful in terms of both %age immunity and longevity and we can go back to normal, and leave the less privileged 2/3 of the planet to get sick. Which is business as usual, let's face it, no one really gave a **** that West Africa has had Ebola for years, I don't think we're going to start caring that most of the global population won't be getting a Covid jab any time soon.

THIS injection, as in Pfizer? Probably not, though I would be far more likely to trust the Oxford/AstraZeneca when it's approved, and would likely take it. I'm literally rock bottom on the priorities list though Arista as I'm a chunk of prime beef in my 30's, so I have a strong suspicion it will be the Oxford vaccine by the time I'm getting it.

My reasoning is that I have strong suspicions that Pfizer has been rushed out less for public health, and more to boost market confidence. It may or may not be safe and effective (on balance, it probably is at least safe) but the whole charade smacks of PR.

netherlands todays numbers

6,187 new cases (932 less than yesterday)

in hospitals now 1,700 patients (compared to yesterday 1,660)

ICU dropped with 6 from 470 to 464

no new deaths known as of yet, and we also do not show the death total anymore either

I never really realised how much the anti-vaxxer 'logic' stuck with people in the UK until talk of a vaccine became reality. It's honestly depressed me how many people I know are doubting the vaccine. not because of valid concerns but because of **** on facebook or things they've heard from their friends.

My main concern has always been that we can’t possibly know about any potential long - term side effects after just a few weeks testing .

Germany update: scientists over there plead for a Hard Lockdown, this must come as good news for Merkel whom already wanted that, so this will get through with all regions in next meeting i think

the more i hear Rutte talk, he just says nothing new, repeating for people to stay alert

''if we are not careful enough, stricter measures might be necessary''

umm, stricter measures are already necessary now
