Why ever not ?

We brought back thousands of Brits when all this first started ... didn’t do us any harm ...

This is my take on it. France closing the border at Dover is essentially "political virtue signalling" - they're closing it because if they don't, there will be a public backlash in France when the new strain is inevitably identified there. They're perfectly well aware that it's already there but they know the public won't want to hear that and will point the finger at the border anyway.

The chances of the virus being spread by freight vehicles is miniscule, the action is ridiculous. I fully understand and even support closing the borders to individuals but closing them to freight is nonsense. Ideally, they need to figure out a driver-swap situation where vehicles are loaded and sent driverless and picked up on the other side by a "twinned" driver... but that would take a tonne of organisation.

We're allowing freight in and out of Ireland still and in and out of the UK too(not that we have much choice anyway considering we're on an Island on our own ) But like I said this whole thing is pointless regardless because anyone could still just fly in to NI and come in to the Republic anyway. There's no chance this new strain isn't here already anyway

Yeah, I think it is likely that we are being penalised for reporting on it first.

new variants have to originate somewhere, we have been lucky so far that it hasn't mutated much at all. Given the scale of infection in the USA, there are bound to be some new variants originating from there

I think the reason its gone crazy in the likes of California, Germany and Italy, is exactly the same reason
Yeah the startling rise in infections make sense now

FFS someone get Claudio a smartphone and an unlimited data package, he surely must realize that he doesn't have to lug around a bloody satellite dish to watch a bit of telly in 2020...
